A fatal crash occurred yesterday morning on the South Loop when a utility pickup and an 18-wheeler collided in the westbound lanes of I-610, authorities reported. The incident took place around 9:25 a.m. in the 5500 block of South Loop East near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. A passenger in the Ford F450 was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Following the collision, the tractor-trailer lost control, dragging the pickup into a grassy area where both vehicles struck a steel retaining wall and a light pole.
