Honduran National Dies in ICE Custody in Houston Hospital Amid Medical Complications and Detention Scrutiny

Houston saw a somber event this past week as Luis Gustavo Nunez Caceres, a 42-year-old Honduran in ICE custody, died in a local hospital. According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Nunez’s death at HCA Houston Healthcare in Conroe was pronounced on January 5 due to complications from chronic heart issues.

Nunez, who was residing in the U.S. illegally after entering on an unrecorded date, was arrested on November 17, 2025, by ICE in a Houston operation. He suffered from congenital heart failure and his condition worsened leading to his hospital admission on December 23, 2025, and he suffered multiple life-threatening emergencies before being moved to the ICU on December 31 where he received ongoing care until his passing, and ICE’s commitment to detainee health care remains under scrutiny as another life lost in custody raises questions about the quality and accessibility of medical services provided.

After his initial arrest, Nunez was initially placed in the Montgomery Processing Center in Conroe and later transferred to the Joe Corley Processing Center, also in Conroe, on November 25.
