Houston man sentenced to 5 years in federal prison for immigration scam

HOUSTON (CW39) — A Houston man was sentenced to five years in federal prison for scamming people who were trying to obtain U.S. citizenship.

Jesus Silva will serve five years in prison and three years supervised release after pleading guilty to mail and wire fraud and stealing almost $1.5 million, U.S. Attorney Nicholas Ganjei said.

At the hearing, prosecutors told U.S. District Judge George Hanks how Silva pretended to be an immigration attorney in Houston and made false promises that he could help people obtain U.S. citizenship and/or other legal immigration status in under a year…
