Hundreds of Houston citizens protested near the Galleria on Thursday night after the fatal shooting of Minneapolis woman Renee Nicole Macklin Good by a United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer. One Houston athlete shared her own protest on social media.
Jordan Thompson, a former U.S. Olympian and star for the LOVB Houston volleyball club, shared her “anger, disgust and grief,” regarding Macklin Good’s death in a statement posted on Instagram. The Minneapolis native dedicated her performance Thursday night to Macklin Good and her memory. LOVB Houston dropped Thursday’s match in straight sets against LOVB Salt Lake, though Thompson led LOVB Houston with 17 kills and 18 points in the match (no other Houston player registered more than six kills).
“Holding space for a lot of different emotions today. anger, disgust, and grief for what is happening in our country and in my hometown of Minneapolis. playing with a heavy heart tonight for Renee Nicole Good who should still be here today,” Thompson wrote. “I’m also holding onto hope that love will outlast hate, and that things won’t always be this way.”
