(KMDL-FM) The economic woes for retailers who once operated profitable brick-and-mortar locations continue to stack up as yet another player in the women’s apparel and accessories industry has announced plans to shutter locations nationwide. The chain, founded in Houston, Texas, in 1999, once boasted several hundred stores across the country.
The chain currently operates some 460 stores across the country. That is down from its peak during the 2010s. Changing economic conditions and the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic forced the brand to make tough economic decisions in 2020.
During the pandemic of 2020, the chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. It was purchased after the bankruptcy filing by a holding company for some $18 to $20 million. That acquisition was finalized in 2021.
Why is Francesca’s Boutique Closing Its Stores Nationwide?
In recent years, there have been reports that the chain has not been paying its suppliers promptly. In fact, there are some that suggest the amount of unpaid invoices accrued by the chain are in excess of $250 million.
