Galveston County jury awards $60 million against Friendswood mother and son after 2023 fatal shooting

Connor Hilton, 19, was sentenced to 50 years in prison as part of a plea bargain for the fatal 2023 shooting of his friend, Ethan Riley. Hilton’s mother, Johnece, was found to be grossly negligent in a civil case for allowing her son to have access to the gun.

A Galveston County jury has awarded $60 million to the family of an 18-year-old who was shot and killed by his friend, Connor Hilton, in 2023. Hilton’s mother, Johnece Hilton, was found by the jury to be mostly responsible for negligence in the killing.

In December 2023, Connor Hilton invited two friends, Benjamin Bliek and Ethan Riley, to his home. He then shot the two, killing Riley.

In a previous criminal trial, Hilton was sentenced to 50 years in prison as part of a plea deal. On Friday, a jury found Hilton negligent in the death of Riley — while determining his mother, Johnece Hilton, bore 75% of responsibility for “caus[ing] or contribut[ing] to cause” Riley’s death, compared to Connor’s 25%…
