Family speaks out after 7-year-old girl catches racially offensive throw at Tucks parade

After a 7-year-old girl from Houston caught a racially offensive Mardi Gras throw at the Tucks parade on her birthday Saturday, and despite an apology from the mayor, her family is leaving New Orleans sooner than they’d hoped, feeling “uncomfortable” with the situation.

Railyn Lee stood with her family on Canal Street on Saturday, catching throws from passing parades, as rider on a Krewe of Tucks float titled “Crack Pipe” tossed Black Barbie-style dolls suspended from the neck on beads.

In a telephone conversation, Railyn’s father George Lee said he wasn’t aware of it at the time, but his daughter had caught one of the dolls and deposited it in a bag filled with other throws. After the parade, his mother-in-law became aware of the controversial Tucks throws via social media and inspected the family’s catch…
