HISD went against an examiner’s guidance and fired a 22-year veteran teacher. Now he’s suing.

A veteran Houston ISD special education teacher is suing the district and the Texas education commissioner after HISD’s state-appointed Board of Managers voted to end his employment — despite an independent hearing examiner’s recommendation to hire the teacher back.

The educator, Brian Tucker, was proposed for contract nonrenewal in April 2025, effectively ending his 22-year career with HISD, according to hearing and court documents.

Tucker appealed and went through court-like proceedings where a state-appointed independent hearing examiner presided over the case like a judge. The examiner heard both HISD’s and Tucker’s attorneys argue their cases and ultimately recommended in August that HISD renew Tucker’s contract…
