2026 Houston rodeo performers: Pepe Aguilar makes a controversial debut on Go Tejano Day

Pepe Aguilar has veered from traditional Mexican music to pop and rock-influenced songs and back again. He has won numerous Grammys and even recorded an “MTV Unplugged” album. His recent tours have all incorporated horses, bullfighting and dancing as part of the show, known as “jaripeo.”

His booking on Go Tejano Day, however, has reopened a long-running debate over what the day is meant to represent. Rodeo organizers said he was recommended multiple times. And there’s no doubt Aguilar knows how to entertain big crowds. He’s been doing it for most of his life.

Aguilar comes from a rich musical heritage. His parents, Antonio Aguilar and Flor Silvestre, were legendary actors and singers. His daughter, Angela, and son, Leonardo, have also found success as singers.
