HISD cancels Milby students’ state cosmetology competition hours before trip

For several hours, buses waited outside Milby High School, ready to take about a dozen cosmetology students to an annual competition early Wednesday morning. But the students never showed up.

Hours before they were set to leave on a four-day trip, the team learned they didn’t have the district’s permission and couldn’t attend the SkillsUSA State Leadership and Skills Conference in Corpus Christi.

“This morning, the kids show up. They’re supposed to leave at 9 a.m.,” said Alexa Aguirre, a Milby cosmetology graduate whose sister is on the team. “Buses are already there, and their teacher is getting told they cannot leave because the superintendent has not given the final authorization.”…
