Houston health leader Dr. David Persse retires after defining era in emergency response

HOUSTON — KHOU 11 News has learned that Houston Health Authority and EMS Director Dr. David Persse is retiring this week, closing out nearly three decades of leadership in the city’s public health system.

Dr. Persse, who has served as Houston’s top medical official since 1996, has been a steady presence through major emergencies ranging from hurricanes and tropical storms to the COVID-19 pandemic.
