State officials say a controversial Kingwood floodplain project is off. Local leaders aren’t so sure.

Texas land officials say a taxpayer-backed project to develop 5,300 acres in a floodplain near Kingwood won’t move forward, but local leaders remain concerned about the property’s future.

The land is located between the East Fork of the San Jacinto River and Spring Creek, near communities that were devastated during past flood events like Hurricane Harvey. If developed, its opponents say the project that would bring more than 7,000 homes to the area could worsen flood risks to residents and businesses in both Montgomery and Harris counties.
