On Sept. 13, family and friends gathered for a truly momentous occasion to honor a remarkable woman on her 100th birthday. More than 150 guests traveled from across the United States and as far away as Portugal, Honduras, and Mexico to join the celebration at the Club on Ruby Hill in Pleasanton. The occasion featured poetry, song, beautiful harp music by Destiny Muhammad, jazz from the Sheldon Alexander Trio, and heartfelt tributes from family and friends. California Secretary of State Shirley Weber, Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee, and the City of Fairfield offered proclamations recognizing this extraordinary milestone, adding another special touch to the celebration. The joyful gathering brought together five generations, all giving thanks for her life, love, and God’s amazing grace.
At 100 years young, Nuna continues to inspire everyone blessed to know her. Her life beautifully reflects kindness, love, and a steadfast Christian faith. Nuna Phillips McKee’s legacy of faith, family, and love continues, and her beautiful story is still being written!
IN MEMORIAM: The Rev. Leon “Sonny” Clark, Longtime Orange County Pastor and Community Leader, Dies at 72
Rev. Leon William “Sonny” Clark, the longtime pastor of New Spirit Baptist Church in Santa Ana and a prominent faith and community leader in Orange County, passed away on September 9 at the age of 72. Born in Bennettsville, South Carolina, Clark was a U.S. Navy veteran who dedicated his life to service. He served various Southern California churches before leading New Spirit Baptist Church for over 22 years, extending his work into counseling, mentoring, and civic engagement, and supporting the African American community.
