Husband who suffered fatal injuries alongside wife in Chula Vista crash identified

A man who suffered fatal injuries alongside his wife during a crash in Chula Vista last month was identified as an Anaheim resident, according to the county Medical Examiner’s Office.

Jose Isabel Sandoval Salgado, 60, was traveling south on Interstate 805 in an SUV driven by his wife, Veronica Romo Sandoval, 61, the morning of Dec. 30, according to county officials. For unknown reasons, the SUV swerved off the road around 10:25 a.m. and crashed into a freeway overpass wall.

The SUV then went through a guardrail, overturned and plunged onto East Naples Street below, county officials said.

Emergency crews found the SUV on its roof.

Veronica Sandoval died before she could be taken to a hospital. Her husband suffered serious injuries and was taken to UCSD Medical Center, where he died on Jan. 15.

The crash is under investigation.
