Mayor of California city dies from cancer; He governed despite being in pain, sickness

In a somber announcement, the City of Redondo Beach confirmed the passing of Mayor Bill Brand at the age of 65, following a courageous battle with stage four lung cancer. Mayor Brand peacefully departed at his home on Friday evening, surrounded by his wife, extended family, and friends.

The City of Redondo Beach released a statement, acknowledging Mayor Brand’s valiant fight against cancer over the past four and a half years. Despite the challenges presented by his health, Brand remained dedicated to his role as mayor and continued serving the community admirably.

Bill Brand’s connection to the South Bay dates back to 1966, and his commitment to community service began in 2000. He played a pivotal role in establishing the South Bay Parkland Conservancy, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and enhancing parkland in the region.

Elected to the Redondo Beach City Council in 2009, Brand’s leadership and dedication earned him the respect of his community. He subsequently served two terms as mayor, even in the face of challenging health conditions. The city’s release emphasized that Mayor Brand’s work for Redondo Beach endured, with his commitment shining through even during periods of hospitalization and pain.
