Long Beach City Council votes 5-3 not to support Proposition 36 reforms

Proposition 36 includes retail theft, fentanyl, and mental health reforms

On a 5-3 vote, the Long Beach City Council voted Tuesday night September 17, 2024, against supporting Proposition 36 and its retail theft, fentanyl, and mental health reforms.

The vote not to support the reforms went against a city staff report and the Council’s own Intergovernmental Affairs Committee recommendations to go on record to support the reforms.

The three voting yes to support Proposition 36 and its reforms were 2nd District Councilwoman Cindy Allen, Third District Councilwoman Kristina Duggan, and Fourth District Councilman Daryl Supernaw.

The five votes against Proposition 36 were Downtown’s District 1 Councilwoman Mary Zendejas, District 6 Councilwoman Suely Saro, District 7 Councilman Roberto Uranga (the agenda sponsor to support Proposition 36) , District 8 Councilman Al Austin and District 9 Councilwoman Dr. Joni Ricks-Oddie.

District 5 Councilwoman Megan Kerr left the meeting before the vote on Proposition 36.
