LA County firefighters mourning death of captain who had been with department for 25 years

The Los Angeles County Fire Department is mourning the death of a fire captain who had been with the department for more than 25 years.

Capt. Michael H. Mercado died recently from a medical condition while off-duty, the department said.

The agency corrected an earlier statement describing his passing as an “active duty death.”

“Capt. Mercado faithfully served our Department, residents & communities for 25+ years,” the department wrote on X. “We extend our condolences to the family, friends & colleagues of Capt. Mercado.”
