Man dies after crashing go-kart into parked pickup in Long Beach

A 51-year-old transient died at a hospital after suffering severe injuries when he crashed a homemade go-kart into a parked vehicle in Long Beach, police said Wednesday.

Officers responded to the intersection of 68th Way and Belhurst Avenue around 6:50 p.m. Tuesday to reports of a homemade go-kart colliding with an unoccupied parked Chevrolet Silverado, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

Long Beach Fire Department paramedics administered life-saving measures to the victim, later identified as Rafael Joseph Phillips Jr., before taking him to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Police said the initial investigation indicated the victim may have suffered a medical emergency that resulted in a “loss of control of the vehicle and subsequent collision with the parked vehicle.”
