California Snowboarder Found Dead at Ski Resort

A 72-year-old snowboarder died after going missing at an Idaho ski resort on Monday, December 30, 2024.

Officials at Schweitzer told the Bonner County Daily Bee that the man was reported missing near the Detention Run in the Outback Bowl on the backside of the mountain. After he was found unresponsive around 12:30 p.m., he was brought to the base of the resort, and pronounced dead by a county coroner.

The man was from Laguna Beach, California. His name and cause of death haven’t yet been released to the public.

Schweitzer extended their deepest condolences to the guest’s family and friends in the wake of the tragic incident, Taylor Prather, Schweitzer’s public information officer, told the Daily Bee .

A snowboarder died at Schweitzer in 2021 after he was reported missing. Riley Hadeen failed to arrive back to a meet-up spot at the end of the day, and search and rescue was therefore enacted. The team from Fairchild Air Force Base flew over the area with thermal sensors until 10 p.m., but he wasn’t found until the following morning, when ski patrol found him in bounds.

The season at Schweitzer has gotten off to a snowy start, as it’s seen 18” of snowfall since December 30, 2024. As of January 2, 2025, every run on the mountain is open.
