LOS ANGELES – With the April 15 tax deadline approaching, California residents have several options to file taxes for free, depending on their income, location, and filing status.
IRS Free File & Direct File
The IRS Free File program partners with eight tax service companies to provide free federal returns for those with an adjusted gross income of $84,000 or less. Some companies also offer free state returns.
Meanwhile, IRS Direct File allows taxpayers in California and 24 other states to submit federal returns directly to the IRS. This option is best for W-2 employees, retirees, and those with Social Security income but does not support gig workers or business owners.
Free Tax Software & In-Person Assistance
Companies like TurboTax, H&R Block, and Cash App Taxes offer free tiers for simple returns. Additionally, the IRS’s VITA and TCE programs provide in-person assistance for eligible individuals.
