BELLFLOWER, California — A brother and sister from La Palma have been charged with murder in the shooting death of a 66-year-old businessman during an attempted robbery at a Cerritos park, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
John Chong Moon, 54, and Cindy Kim, 57, both of La Palma, face one count of murder and one count of attempted second-degree robbery in the case. Their arraignment is scheduled for today in Department 4 of the Bellflower Courthouse. If convicted, each could face life in state prison. The District Attorney’s Office has recommended bail be set at $3 million for Moon and $2 million for Kim.
The incident occurred on February 25, when Cuauhtemoc Garcia was exiting his vehicle to walk along the Coyote Creek Bike Path near Don Knabe Park in Cerritos. The defendants allegedly attempted to steal Garcia’s car, and when he refused to hand over the keys, they reportedly shot and killed him.
