According to Action News 30, a jury convicted George Thomas, 72, guilty of leading a huge catalytic converter-stealing ring. In total, he earned over $2.7 million. According to the investigation, he operated with a ring of thieves from January 2021 until November 2022. Essentially, he provided the subordinates detailed instructions on what types of converters he needed and how to steal them from cars. He also provided them money for tools they required to commit the thefts, such as saws.
The catalytic converter thefts occurred in Fresno, California. However, they were shipped to Oregon, where Thomas sold them. Authorities caught George Thomas in 2023, and incidences of converter theft in the area declined by roughly 60%, which is quite striking.
