OAKLAND — California Attorney General Rob Bonta has issued a legal alert reminding businesses that bribing foreign-government officials to secure or retain business remains illegal under state law.
Despite a federal suspension of enforcement under the Trump Administration’s executive order, Bonta emphasized that the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) violations are still actionable under California’s Unfair Competition Law (UCL).
“Illegal activity is still illegal,” Bonta stated, stressing that bribery undermines fair competition and consumer trust. As the fifth-largest economy globally, California has a vested interest in protecting honest business practices.…
