Council upholds approval of CdM restaurant patio; also OKs allowing housing development, increased heights in Newport Center

City Council had several notable items up for discussion this week.

Councilmembers unanimously denied an appeal and upheld the approval for an existing temporary outdoor dining patio to remain for a limited term at a longtime restaurant in Corona del Mar. They voted 6-0 (Sara Weber recused herself due to a business conflict) on Tuesday (April 29) in support of the Planning Commission’s December 5 decision to deny the appeal and affirm the zoning administrator’s August approval of a limited term permit and coastal development permit for the patio at Five Crowns restaurant, located at 3801 East Coast Highway.

The expanded 1,350-square-foot outdoor dining area, including an 850-square-foot canopy, was originally approved by an emergency temporary use permit in 2020 as a temporary addition to the restaurant’s existing outdoor dining during the pandemic.
