NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — For years now, a 17-year-old high schooler in Newport Coast has been working on developing technology to help detect wildfires.
Ryan Honary’s passion to create something started while he was away from home at a tennis tournament in 2018. He was watching TV and saw images of the Camp Fire in Butte County.
“I called my mom to ask if she was ok because the hills and homes burning looked just like the hills and homes behind my house,” he said. “And she was, and I felt a wave of relief. But then I felt a bit of guilt. How could I feel relieved and go on with the rest of my day while other people and animals were running for their lives and didn’t know if their houses or homes were even going to survive?”…
