Community comes together at Huntsville ceremony to honor fallen soldiers

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — For 29-year military veteran David Beier, the annual Memorial Day ceremony at the Huntsville-Madison County Veterans Memorial Park was more than a formal tradition—it was a deeply personal mission.

Beier, a Sergeant First Class in the U.S. Army Reserve, served as the event’s bugler, providing a live performance of “Taps” to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice. It was a role he took seriously, noting a critical shortage of live musicians for veteran services across North Alabama.

“My biggest emphasis is making sure that we have a live bugler that plays Taps and honors the veteran,” Beier said. “We have too many veterans in North Alabama and we have a lot of funerals. Unfortunately, in my opinion, they are underserved to some extent… because they get a service, they get a ceremony, but they get a recorded version of Taps.”

Living in Huntsville for more than three decades, Beier viewed his participation as a way to give back to the community and to ensure the sacrifices of the fallen were never forgotten…
