Shorter family heirloom piano finds its way back to Thornwood

A piece of Shorter University history has returned home after more than a century.

A 19th-century square piano once believed to have been housed at Thornwood, the historic estate of Alfred Shorter and Martha Baldwin Shorter, has been donated back to the university by descendants of the Shorter family.

The instrument was gifted by Monro B. Lanier III and Martha Shorter Dougherty of Huntsville, Alabama. It has now been installed at Shorter University’s Thornwood campus, where it serves as both a historic artifact and a connection to the institution’s founding legacy…
