A bitcoin mining data center is attempting to build on the outskirts of Somerville, but nearby residents are doing all they can to block it, including refusing to sell parcels of property for utility rights of way.
“I lost my son six months ago to brain cancer. I just want my peace,” said Union Road resident Lyndsey Hutson. “I just want my quiet and my peace because this last year’s been a living hell. Somebody built us a swing out in our yard where we’re going to do a memorial garden for my son. I don’t want to look out over the field and see that abomination. I just want to see the mountain and the trees and the grass flowing. That’s what I want to see. I don’t want to see all that crap out there.”
The data center company, named Sovereign Gazelle, was incorporated in April. They plan to open a bitcoin mining data center at 369 Union Road in Morgan County Commission District 4 just outside of Somerville. Union Road is about a mile-and-a-half long with around 40 or 50 houses on it.
