HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) – The heat becomes the main story beginning Thursday as a strong ridge and heat dome build across the Southeast. Afternoon temperatures will climb into the mid to upper 90s, with heat index values commonly 105–110° and potentially higher Sunday into Monday. Overnight lows in the mid to upper 70s will provide very little relief.
Rain chances fade quickly. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are possible again Thursday, but by Friday the building ridge should shut down most storm development. That means a very hot and mostly dry weekend, with only a few isolated storms possible—mainly in the higher terrain.
There could be near-record heat if enough dry air works into the region, and the combination of extreme heat and humidity could push heat index values above 110°, potentially requiring an upgrade to an Extreme Heat Warning…
