Preparing ahead of significant weather events

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — The Tennessee Valley experienced a winter storm a week ago that brought snow, ice, and arctic air to the region. Roads were iced over for a week and some people were unable to leave their homes.

The coordination in Madison County between public works, elected officials, emergency crews, and the Madison County Emergency Management (EMA) was essential to the preparation ahead of the past week’s storm.

Madison County EMA Director Jeff Birdwell said during the event, the greatest accomplishments that came from the coordination calls were updates on roads and making sure everyone knew what was going on across the county. Birdwell said this ensured that they could provide the best assistance to the residents in the county.

With this winter event lasting over a week, many started running low on supplies.

During other weather events, this unfortunately happens often too. Many grab a limited amount of supplies, but Birdwell says it is essential to have enough basic needs to last you 72 hours.
