New transit bus station coming to Huntsville set for completion in May

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — A new transit transfer station in Huntsville is expected to be finished before the end of the year.

Thanks to a nearly $13 million grant issued back in 2020 by the Federal Transportation Administration, the city is expanding its public transit system.

Huntsville leaders vote in favor of amended version of new hands-free driving ordinance

A new 3,800-square-foot transit station will be located on Pratt Avenue in downtown Huntsville and will make room for more buses and additional routes will be added to the city’s transportation system.

“The new transit center will allow us to expand services to places we currently don’t serve; it will allow us to add buses and improve frequency,” Huntsville’s Public Transit Manager John Autry said.

Autry says thousands use the city’s orbit bus system daily and as the population in Huntsville continues to grow, so does the need for more public transportation.

“We’re looking to add a route in south Huntsville Route 56 all the way down to Hobbs Road,” Autry told News 19. “We’ll also be expanding routes in the Southwest part of Huntsville in and around the airport to businesses in and around that area.”
