North Alabama residents often experience severe weather from March to May and again in November and December. The Huntsville-Madison County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) has shared safety tips for these stormy periods. They stress the need for an emergency preparedness kit, including water, non-perishable foods, a battery-powered radio, flashlights, cell phone chargers, whistles, a first aid kit, sanitary items, medication, and warm blankets or sleeping bags.

Local businesses, as well as homes, should have severe weather contingency plans. The EMA has a sample plan for workplace safety procedures. The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) suggests every workplace should have an emergency plan, NOAA Weather Radio, written policies and procedures, and be ready for power outages.

Huntsville and Madison cities lack public safe rooms for severe weather. However, some buildings, like places of worship, may open during these times. Residents can register their private storm shelters, which can assist first responders in case of a tornado.
