Teacher surprised in her classroom and recognized for 24 years worth of hard work

DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) — For Mrs. Angie Maples, Friday was a regular day at school.

That is until she got a special surprise when she walked into her classroom.

“I was shocked.. absolutely shocked. I saw my daughter coming toward me,” said Maples. “I saw my best friend coming toward me and all these people coming toward me with balloons, and I had no earthly idea what it was.”

It was a celebration for her as she was just named the superstar teacher of the month.

The award, presented by the Decatur-Morgan County Chamber of Commerce, recognizes teachers who are going above and beyond in the classroom.

I’m so touched and so honored that first of all, my administrator, thought enough of me to nominate me,” she said. “It’s inspires me to work harder. It inspires me to make sure I’m worthy of this honor.”

Maples has taught for more than 24 years, and now leads an English and language arts class at Career Academies of Decatur (CAD).
