Madison Superintendent: Communication protocols ‘not followed’ in Liberty Middle gun incident

MADISON, Ala. (WHNT) — Madison City Schools said communication protocols were not followed during an incident where a student took a loaded gun to Liberty Middle School on Thursday.

In a statement on Friday, Superintendent Ed Nichols said that a communication breakdown led to a delay in the school’s response to the incident.

The Madison Police Department (MPD) said on Thursday that a student has been charged with certain persons forbidden to possess a firearm after being found with a 9mm handgun after lunch. He was taken to Neaves-Davis Juvenile Detention Center.

The department said the student was approached by a school resource officer (SRO) after they had been linked to a report Wednesday night involving a 13-year-old carrying a gun around at a local apartment complex.

Nichols said while that investigation found no credible threat or intent to harm anyone at the school, a communication breakdown between the police department and school led to a delay in the system’s response.
