DECATUR, Ala. ( WHNT ) — Protesters gathered after an attempt to place items at the Steve Perkins memorial at city hall was stopped.

Mayor Tab Bowling told News 19 that Perkins supporters were warned that the items would be removed if they were not taken down immediately.

“Things such as memorials require approval to be placed at City Hall. A couple of items were placed by Perkins supporters at our front entrance. After receiving counsel from our Legal and Police Departments, I notified the supporters that they needed to remove the items or we would need to remove them. No effort to remove was made by the supporters. A Police Sergeant returned to the entrance and gave them 10 minutes to remove the items or we would remove them. 10 minutes passed and the items were removed. Keep in mind that if we grant permission for one group to place items at the entrance to City Hall we must grant permission to others.”
