HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — It was an active year for the Tennessee Valley between a January ice storm and a tornado outbreak in May. Along with tracking the weather this year, the Weather Authority welcomed a new member to the team!
Meteorologist Pooja Simpson has been with News since 2020 as a director but earlier this year she became the weekend evening meteorologist. She has always had a passion for severe weather but became even more interested after the April 2011 tornado event across Alabama. Having lived in Huntsville and experiencing the tragedy firsthand, she realized she wanted to do something that could help those in her community.
A total of 20 tornadoes confirmed from May 8-9 storm system
The weather was certainly active this year, especially during January and May.
The National Weather Service (NWS) Office in Huntsville covers 11 counties in North Alabama and 3 counties in Tennessee. There were 27 tornadoes within the NWS forecast area; 20 in Alabama and 7 in Tennessee.
