Federal lawsuit alleges Madison City Schools denied autistic student’s rights

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — A local law firm has filed suit in the Northern District of Alabama on behalf of a woman who claims her autistic daughter has been mistreated at a Madison City school.

The claim, filed by The Law Office of Mastando & Artrip on behalf of Kristi Krueger, names the Madison City Schools Board of Education and several individual educators. The complaint accuses the district and staff of violating the civil rights of the child under the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Rehabilitation Act, and the U.S. Constitution.

“RK,” now 18, is a nonverbal autistic student who attended Discovery Middle School. According to the lawsuit, while enrolled, RK was subjected to repeated physical abuse and humiliation by school staff, including being forced to take showers, locked alone in a dark room, and harassed by educators—actions allegedly carried out under the guise of providing special education services…
