PAINT ROCK, Ala. (WHNT) — A local fire department is hosting a benefit for a family involved in a Mother’s Day wreck that left two of the four dead.
The Paint Rock Volunteer Fire Department announced it would be hosting a “Benefit BBQ” for the Smith family on May 31 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
On May 11, a truck pulling cargo for Amazon hit six cars on I-75 in Chattanooga, Tenn., with two of the cars catching fire in the crash. Two people were killed and eight others were injured and taken to nearby hospitals. The Smith family was among those injured/killed in the wreck.
The father, Lane, was pronounced dead on the scene. His 22-month-old son, Sawyer, died at a local hospital on May 18, exactly one week after the wreck. The mother, Baleigh, and 8-year-old sister, Brynlee, remain in the hospital following the wreck.
“Lane was truly one of a kind—a jack of all trades with a heart as big as his skillset. He was the best son, grandson, brother, husband, stepdad, and, ultimately, the proudest and most devoted dad. To know Lane was to love him.”

“From the moment he entered the world, Sawyer brought pure joy to everyone around him. He was full of life—wide open from daylight to dark—and his bright smile and sweet, innocent laugh had a way of lighting up every room. He was the happiest little boy, always ready for fun, and so deeply loved by everyone who knew him.”
