Halsey Avenue residents fighting for traffic calming measures

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — A Huntsville neighborhood is rallying together in response to what residents say is a dangerous speeding issue on their street. The community along Halsey Avenue looking to reach a major milestone in the process to install speed cushions—a traffic calming measure they hope will finally slow drivers down.

According to the Huntsville Traffic Engineering Office, the process begins when a complaint is filed. A team is then dispatched to survey the area and determine whether speeding is a consistent problem. If it is, the city issues a petition to the neighborhood. At least 75% of homeowners on the affected street must sign in favor of the traffic control measures before the city takes further action.

Residents say the need is urgent. “This is a 25 mile an hour zone and last year when [the city] came and put down the traffic counters, the average speed was 38 miles an hour,” said Gail Lee, who lives on Halsey Avenue…
