Madison set to annex 14 acres next to proposed Mormon temple site

Madison is expected to annex nearly 14 acres next to the proposed site of a new temple for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

In a Thursday meeting, the city’s planning commission recommended the Madison City Council approve the annexation of 13.98 acres in two undeveloped parcels between Gillespie Road and Browns Ferry Road. The space is part of an exclave of Madison County that is surrounded by city-zoned land. It lies north and west of Movement Church, whose land is not being annexed.

The Latter-Day Saints Church owns both undeveloped parcels, along with the one immediately to the west, whose 8 acres are already within the city of Madison. The latter is where the church plans to build a one-story, 30,000-square-foot temple, that would be its second in Alabama…
