Alabama commission awards $731.33 for Derek Walls’ murder expenses

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The family of Derek Walls, the victim in a murder and sexual torture case, has been awarded compensation for expenses related to his death. The Alabama Crime Victims Compensation Commission (ACVCC) has approved a payment of $731.33 to Shelby Thorson, the claimant in the case against Kyle Haden Lewter.

In a letter dated June 17, reviewed by FOX54, the ACVCC informed the Madison County District Attorney’s Office of the award. The commission has requested that the judge in the case order Lewter to pay restitution to the commission to cover the amount awarded to the claimant. If restitution has already been ordered, the commission has asked for the order to be amended to include this payment.
