Monroe Street revamp continues amid opening of state’s largest Starbucks

Anyone visiting downtown near Big Spring Park can’t miss ongoing work at Monroe Street near the Von Braun Center.

Why it matters: Streetscape improvements by the city are progressing, the Trilogy Hotel is nearing its opening date and Alabama’s largest Starbucks has been pulling the convention center crowd since March.

  • Likely the most notable work (thanks to the lane shift) has been the streetscape improvements between Clinton and Williams avenues, which the city approved in March.
  • The project will add landscaping and irrigation and two large decorative pedestrian crossings, and will resurface the whole stretch.

What’s next: Kelly Schrimsher, the city’s communications director, told Axios the work on the east side should finish up next month, when that lane will reopen and the west side will close for repairs there.

  • The whole 1,000-foot section of Monroe Street is set to reopen in September.
