HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Get ready to look up, Rocket City! One of the most dazzling astronomical events of the year is about to light up the night sky. The Perseid Meteor Shower will peak overnight Aug. 11–12, promising up to 100 meteors per hour streaking across the heavens. Sunday night (Aug. 10) should also provide a good viewing opportunity.
The U.S. Space & Rocket Center is encouraging local stargazers to soak in this natural spectacle. In a recent social media post, they reminded followers: “You won’t need a telescope to enjoy the show. Just head outside as early as 11 PM, find a dark spot, and look up!”
Why It’s Special
The Perseids are the result of Earth passing through a trail of debris left by Comet Swift-Tuttle. As the tiny particles hit Earth’s atmosphere, they burn up, producing bright “shooting stars” that dazzle skywatchers every summer. With many meteors being particularly bright, even the waning gibbous Moon this year shouldn’t dampen the show too much—just try blocking it with a tree or structure to improve visibility.
Best Time & Place to Watch in Huntsville
Experts recommend heading out after midnight, though you may start seeing activity as early as 11 PM. For the best view, get away from city lights. Huntsville locals might consider spots like Monte Sano State Park, Green Mountain Nature Preserve, or any rural area away from streetlights for the darkest skies.
The meteors will appear to radiate from the Perseus constellation, located in the northeastern sky, but you’ll be able to see meteors streaking in all directions.
