White phosphorus mortar round found on Redstone Arsenal

REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. (WHNT) — Officials at Redstone Arsenal say the installation has activated safety protocols after an unexploded mortar shell was found by a construction crew Tuesday morning.

According to Team Redstone, around 8 a.m. Tuesday, construction workers near building 6272, DEVCOM Aviation & Missile Center’s Software, Simulation, Systems Engineering and Integration Directorate (DEVCOM AvMC S3I), found an unexploded 4.2mm white phosphorus mortar round while digging near a sidewalk.

The Arsenal said the round does not pose an immediate threat to the installation, but a safety perimeter has been established and is being monitored by Garrison safety personnel.

“Given Redstone’s history as a World War II-era arsenal, we are prepared for the occasional discovery of unexploded ordnance and have established protocols to address these incidents safely,” Officials said…
