Man sentenced for Marshall County drug charges connected to overdose death

MARSHALL COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — The Marshall County District Attorney’s Office says a man has been sentenced to 20 years for drug charges related to an overdose death in 2022.

District Attorney Jennifer Bray said Alex Hollingsworth was sentenced to 20 years in prison on Tuesday after he pleaded guilty to Unlawful Distribution of a Controlled Substance with an Aggravating Factor (Distribution Caused Death).

Bray said Hollingsworth was charged due to his distributing cocaine laced with fentanyl to a 26-year-old Marshall County resident, who then died. The DA said that the man was one of five fentanyl related overdoses in the county between February 25 and 27, 2022. She said two of those overdoses were fatal.

The district attorney’s office spike in overdoses led the Marshall County Coroner’s Office to alert the county drug task force, leading to an extensive multi-agency investigation that involved the Albertville Police Department, Boaz Police Department, Guntersville Police Department and the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office. Bray said that investigation ultimately led to Hollingsworth’s arrest…
