Decatur police officer shoots suspect during traffic stop

DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) — The Decatur Police Department has confirmed that an officer was involved in a shooting on Wednesday night.

According to Decatur Police Chief Torry Mack, an officer initiated a traffic stop for a minor traffic infraction around 8:25 p.m. in the area of 12th Avenue SW and 1st Street SW. The vehicle continued at a low speed and came to a complete stop on 11th Avenue.

Mack said the suspect got out of the vehicle, and “immediately brandished what appears to be a firearm towards the officer.” He said that the primary officer then fired his service weapon approximately three times and hit the suspect at least one time…
