Community members honor graves of veterans each year

Volunteers fanned out across Maple Hill Cemetery on Nov. 19, laying thousands of wreaths on the graves of fallen service members as part of the annual Wreaths for Veterans remembrance.

The effort, organized by the Huntsville-based nonprofit Wreaths for Veterans, brought out more volunteers than in any previous year, according to organizers. Founded in 2007 and run entirely by volunteers, the group was the first in Alabama to launch a communitywide wreath-laying tribute honoring veterans during the December holiday season.

“We have probably over 200 folks that have shown up now here at Maple Hill Cemetery,” Jennifer Hames of Wreaths for Veterans said. “We had 130 students from Madison Academy. We had 30 students from Buckhorn, 30 from Westminster Christian Academy, and that doesn’t even count all the independent volunteers.”…
