Camgian opens office to power next-gen missile defense

Huntsville is home to a new high-tech defense contractor, Camgian, which cut the ribbon on its Rideout Road office Monday.

Why it matters: Starkville, Mississippi-based Camgian is an example of the high-tech focus of air and missile defense centered in Huntsville that’s going to drive development of Golden Dome and other initiatives.

  • The company specializes in kill chain automation software for air missile defense systems. A kill chain is essentially the decision-making process of identifying a target and neutralizing it.

Zoom in: Its marquee product is Reactor, a kill chain automation platform for air missile defense that helps air defense operators improve mission survivability, especially in contested environments like drone swarms, said Gary Butler, CEO and founder.

What he’s saying: “It’s our mission to bring decision advantage to our warfighters through advanced AI machine learning technologies,” Butler said before cutting the ribbon at the company’s new office.

  • “The momentum around our work and integrating this kind of technology into next-generation command and control systems is growing very fast right now, especially here in Huntsville, with different Army program offices as well as different partners,” he told Axios Huntsville.
  • “This office represents our epicenter, if you will, for supporting those very important missions in air missile defense.”

By the numbers: Camgian was awarded a U.S. Army contract last year for more than $23 million to provide AI-powered counter-drone capabilities.

  • It also won a $55-million contract to develop kill chain automation technologies for the Army’s Integrated Air and Missile Defense systems, for which Northrop Grumman and Raytheon in Huntsville are also major contractors.
  • Butler said the firm has about 25 employees at its Huntsville office, mostly engineers, and plans to grow very quickly.

What we’re watching: “Golden Dome is something we’re very focused on as a company,” Butler said. “So when you think about the program offices here, as well as the partner companies in this area, it just makes a lot of sense for us to have a footprint.”…
