HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Huntsville Hospital Foundation has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the American Cancer Society to enhance its Canines for Coping facility dog program, which provides therapeutic support to pediatric cancer patients.
The ACS PAWS (Pups Assisting with Support) grant will help cover costs associated with the animal-assisted therapy program, including veterinary care, handler training, food, toys and other necessary expenses. The funding specifically targets services for children with cancer and their families, offering moments of comfort and connection during difficult treatments.
Bringing Comfort During Treatment
Nine-year-old Brayden, diagnosed with osteosarcoma last year, has experienced firsthand the benefits of the program. Throughout multiple surgeries and chemotherapy treatments, Orbit, a full-time facility dog at Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children, has provided steady companionship during hospital stays and clinic visits.
“Orbit has a way of meeting patients right where they are,” said Victoria Smith, Canines for Coping Coordinator and Orbit’s handler. “Sometimes that means easing their anxiety before a procedure, and other times it simply means helping them smile again.”…
