Decatur Utilities asks residents to register their permanent standby generators

DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) — As winter brings colder temperatures, some may be considering installing a permanent standby generator to take over in case of a power outage.

Decatur Utilities warns that, without an automatic disconnect, these generators can be dangerous, even deadly, to linemen working to reestablish power during an outage.

“If that disconnect is not in place, it will feed electricity back up the line,” said Joe Holmes, the Communications and Public Relations Coordinator for Decatur Utilities. “It can kill our linemen because they think that the power’s off, and they’re working on the line. Suddenly, you fire up your generator, it’s feeding electricity back, and they can come in contact with that and be electrocuted.”
